Included are portraits of Humphrey as a child, with President Dwight Eisenhower and various members of the Eisenhower administration, and with his wife, Pamela Stark Humphrey. Group photographs contain views of Eisenhower's second inauguration that include Vice President Richard M. Nixon; business associates of Humphrey; various ceremonies, receptions, and dinners attended by Humphrey and his wife; photographs of Humphrey receiving various honorary academic degrees at a number of institutions; Humphrey with Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain; and travel photographs, including several trips with President Eisenhower and other cabinet members. A booklet contains photographs and maps relating to the operation of the Iron Ore Company of Canada. Born in Pennsylvania to Michael A. and Martha A. (Dodson) Dively, he attended Lock Haven State College, earned a B.S. in electrical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1925, and a M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1929. During the Great Depression, he worked at North American Refractories and at Republic Steel Corporation. He joined the Harris-Seybold-Potter Company of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1937, becoming director in 1941, vice president and general manager in 1944, and president in 1947. The company became the Harris-Intertype Corporation in 1957, and later the Harris Corporation. He served as president and chairman of the board from 1954-1961, continuing as board chairman from 1961 until his retirement in 1972. In 1971, his book, The Power of Professional Management, was published. He was a co-founder of the Cleveland One Percent Plan, whose mission was to encourage corporate support for higher education. Dively endowed a professorship in electrical engineering at Case Western Reserve University, where he served as vice chairman of the University Board of Trustees. In 1956 he endowed the Geo. S. Dively Foundation to assist various charitable and educational interests. He married Harriet Seeds in 1933. In 1969, he married Juliette Gaudin. | | | | Creator: | Harper, Alexander Family | | | | Dates: | 1755-1935 | | | | Abstract: | Alexander Harper, a Revolutionary War officer, brought his family to settle in Ashtabula County, Ohio (then a part of the Western Reserve) in 1798. The settlement was named Harpersfield by the family after their hometown in New York. After Alexander Harper's death in September 1798, his widow Elizabeth Harper was joined in 1799 by Alexander's brother Joseph and by her daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Aaron Wheeler. Elizabeth's children; William, Elizabeth, John A., James A., Alexander, and Robert, all became prominent members of the community. In 1814, the Harpers were among those who organized the Harpersfield Commercial Company. Most prominent of the Harper brothers was Robert, who married Polly Hendry in 1815 and began construction of the family homestead, Shandy Hall. Robert was a lawyer, farmer, businessman, Superintendent of the Public Works at Cunningham Creek, and a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. His nephew, Rice Harper, was also a prominent lawyer and businessman, and was involved in the Ohio Rail Road Company with his uncle. Robert Harper's daughter Ann moved to Sandusky, Ohio, shortly after her marriage to Dr. Aaron Austin. His eldest daughter Ellen lived at Shandy Hall with her youngest sister Jane and Jane's husband, Alexander J. Harper. The last owners of Shandy Hall were Stella and Ann Harper, the two daughters of Alexander and Jane Harper. After the death of Ann Harper in 1935, the property was maintained by the David Z. Norton family, cousins of the Harpers. In 1948, the Norton family donated Shandy Hall to the Western Reserve Historical Society. He founded the Bailey Meter Company, a major manufacturer of industrial meters and controls, in 1916. The company was moved from Boston, Massachusetts to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1919. In 1926, Bailey Meter Company was purchased by The Babcock and Wilcox Company, although it continued production under its own name. Ervin Bailey remained with Babcock and Wilcox, serving as president of the Fuller LeHigh Company division 1926-1936, as chairman of Bailey Meter Company 1944-1956, and as a vice president of Babcock and Wilcox 1931-1951. Bailey was awarded 141 United States patents for his inventions in the fields of fluid and combustion control. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers; a member of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers; the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers; and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, London, England. He was also the author of many articles on metering, controls, fuels and combustion, and engineering education. He began his career in shipping as a ship boy at the age of sixteen, and by the age of twenty was a captain. He left New York City in 1867 for the Great Lakes, where he invested in the shipping industry and eventually owned and operated the Wilson Marine Transit Company, based in Cleveland, Ohio. The company specialized in bulk cargo shipping on the Great Lakes. By the time of Wilson's death in 1900, the company's fleet included 17 steamers, two sailing ships, and a barge. The collection consists of correspondence, publications, and legal documents relating to Wilson's career in the shipping industry. Co. | | | | Dates: | 1891-1982 | | | | Abstract: | The Halle Brothers Company (1891-1982), a department store known for high quality merchandise and superior service, began on February 7, 1891 as a small hat and fur shop operated by brothers Samuel H. (1868-1954) and Salmon P. Halle (1866-1949). It was located at 221 Superior Street near Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio. They purchased the business from Captain T. S. Paddock. In 1893 the business was moved to Euclid Avenue and East 4th Street due to a need for more space. It was also around this time that women's ready to wear clothing began to be carried by the store. In 1902 the company was incorporated, changing its name from Halle Brothers to The Halle Bros. Co. The store continued to grow, adding both space and departments. A new building was constructed at Euclid and East 12th Street where the company moved in 1910. An addition was opened in 1914 allowing for the addition of new departments including furniture, toys, and sporting goods. In 1921 Salmon P. Halle resigned as president to devote himself to philanthropic work and other private interests. Samuel Halle then became president. By 1927 a new building, the Huron-Prospect store was opened in the Playhouse Square district. Branch stores were opened in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1929 and Canton, Ohio, in 1930. Although losses did occur during the Depression, business bounced back after World War II allowing Halle Bros. Co. to open suburban branches, beginning with a Shaker Square store in 1948. Walter Halle, son of Samuel, became president in 1946 and Samuel moved to the position of chairman of the board. There was also expansion to their main downtown Euclid Avenue store which was completed in 1949. Problems began to arise in the 1960s stemming from their over-expanded downtown store and sales competition from stores such as the Higbee Co. and May Co. In 1970 Halle Bros. Co. was merged with Marshall Field and Company of Chicago. Operations continued to decline and Chisholm Halle, son of Walter who had become president in 1966, resigned in 1974. Medium-priced goods were introduced but failed help the stores and in 1981 they were sold to Associated Investors Corporation which closed or sold all stores in 1982. | | | | Creator: | Western Reserve Historical Society | | | | Dates: | 1764-1874 | | | | Abstract: | The Connecticut Western Reserve was the area of northeast Ohio that Connecticut had reserved for her citizens in 1786 in exchange for ceding all western land claims to the U.S. government. The area comprised all land south of Lake Erie to 41' latitude and within 120 miles of Pennsylvania's western border. The Connecticut Land Company (1795-1809) was authorized by Connecticut to purchase and resell most of the Western Reserve, and received title to all Reserve land except for the 500,000-acre Firelands on the extreme west which was reserved for Connecticut victims whose lands were burned by the British in the Revolution. Gen. Moses Cleaveland, a company director and its general agent, led the first company survey party to the Reserve in 1796 and founded the settlement of Cleveland at the mouth of the Cuyahoga River. The collection consists of records of the Connecticut Land Company, including articles of association, proceedings, reports, minutes, accounts, records of drafts, and other papers, 1795-1827; land surveys, field notes, and plats of early Western Reserve surveyors, 1796-1815; journals and diaries of early residents, 1765-1807; correspondence; newspaper clippings; statements in response to John Barr and others soliciting information on the early history of Cleveland and the Western Reserve; writings of Charles Whittlesey on topics such as the 1797 surveying party, local town histories, history of the Northwest Territory; biographical sketches of early settlers, including Lorenzo Carter, Simon Perkins, Abraham and Benjamin Tappan, and John Walworth; and miscellaneous papers relating to the early history of Cleveland and the Western Reserve, including John Heckewelder's description of northeast Ohio, 1796. | | | | Creator: | Hays, Joseph Family | | | | Dates: | 1874-1977 | | | | Abstract: | Joseph Hays (1838-1916) was the son of Abraham and Bertha Hexter Hays of Storndorf, in the German state of Hesse Darmstadt. After Joseph's mother died in 1844, he and other family members immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, from Germany in 1856. Joseph Hays started as a peddler and eventually became involved in the clothing, scrap iron, and real estate business. He married Rosetta Schwarzenberg, and had five children. His daughter, Bertha, married Charles Eisenman, co-founder of Kastriner and Eisenman, later Kaynee Ccmpany, a clothing manufacturer. Eisenman was also a founder and first president of the Federation of Jewish Charities (later known as the Jewish Community Federation). Joseph Hays' sons, Louis and Eugene Hays, later purchased Kaynee Company from Eisenman. Louis Hays, who had served as a vice president and trustee of Mt. Sinai Hospital, was president of Kaynee at the time of his death in 1918. His son, Robert, was president of Kaynee from 1937 until 1954, when the company was sold. Robert Hays was also a founding member of Suburban Temple. Louis Hays' wife, Jessie Seligman Feiss, was the niece of Julius Feiss, owner of Joseph and Feiss Company, which manufactured clothing. His son, Paul Louis Feiss, served as chairman of the company, beginning in 1925. He was also a founder and first president of Mt. Sinai Hospital. The collection consists of individual portraits of the Hays, Eisenman, Feiss, Halle, Heiner, Maschke, and Seligman family members. It was organized in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914 by Frederick J. Goff and the Board of Directors of the Cleveland Trust Company. It has provided funds for educational and artistic development and for humanitarian purposes such as housing and aid to children and the handicapped. The collection consists of grant files, both accepted and declined, which include agreements, award letters, brochures, budgets, correspondence, evaluations, financial statements, forms, memoranda, newsletters, notes, press releases, programs, proposals, and reports. All photographs and audio/visual media have been retained in their respective grant files. The Cleveland Foundation Assistance to Other Foundations series contains much the same document types as the grant files. Other document types contained in the collection include annual reports, articles, budgets, correspondence, declaration of trusts, forms, indexes, lists, memoranda, minutes, newsletters, notes, and reports. It supports education and various projects of community organizations located primarily in northeastern Ohio, but also in Ohio and the United States. Of particular interest to the Foundation are new teaching methods and education for disadvantaged people. The arts, civic affairs, economic development, the environment, and human services are also priorities of the Foundation. Abortion rights, women's issues, handgun control, homelessness, equal housing, museum development, retinitis pigmentosa research, AIDS public policy and education, community gardening, historic preservation, population control, family planning, and nuclear weapons control are also areas supported by the Foundation. | | | | Creator: | Haven, William Anderson | | | | Dates: | 1930-1972 | | | | Abstract: | William Anderson Haven (1888-1973) was a chemical engineer who worked at U.S. Steel, New York Steel, Carnegie Steel, Marting Iron Company and Republic Steel. After management differences with Cyrus Eaton at Republic in 1929 he left to become vice-president of Arthur G. McKee and Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Before his retirement in 1953 he had planned or supervised the construction of numerous steel plants and oil refineries in the United States and throughout the world. The collection consists of consist of views of steel plants in the United States, France, Germany, and India. Included are views of the Republic Steel Corporation plant in Cleveland, Ohio, and the Great Lakes Steel Corporation plant in Detroit, Michigan. | | | | Creator: | Ford, Horatio | | | | Dates: | 1896-1926 | | | | Abstract: | The Eastern Ohio Traction Company, a Cleveland interurban railroad, was formed by the 1902 merger of the Cleveland and Eastern Railway Company, the Cleveland and Chagrin Falls Railway Company, and the Chagrin Falls and Eastern Railway Company. In 1910, the company was reorganized into two affiliated, yet separate companies, the Cleveland and Eastern Traction Company, which was abandoned in 1925, and the Cleveland, Youngstown and Eastern Railway Company, which became the Cleveland and Chagrin Falls Railway in 1915 and was then abandoned in 1925. Horatio Ford (1881-1952) served on the board of several of these lines. Ohio was the heartland of the electric interurban railway early in the 20th century, with a 2,798 mile network. The electric carriers offered the public clean and convenient service, operating at greater frequency and dramatically lower costs vs. the steam railroad. The electric interurban was also an exceedingly attractive business venture.
